Highlights:
- Google may be only a year or two away from total disruption.
- AI will eliminate the Search Engine Result Page, which is Google’s core business.
- As Google killed the pre-Internet business The Yellow Pages, AI will do the same thing to web searches.
Gmail creator Paul Buccheit says that ChatGPT could surpass Google within the upcoming years. It could potentially replace Google’s most profitable product, Google Search.
He thinks even if Google were to advance in AI, it wouldn’t be able to implement it fully without risking its most valuable business.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is still on trend since its release in November 2022. GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer. Users can interact with it as a chatbot, but at the backend, it uses its AI algorithms to reply to user queries. Its real strength is its ability to converse naturally, an area traditionally dominated by Google.
“AI will eliminate the Search Engine Result Page, which is where they make most of their money,” Paul Buccheit said in a tweet.
He mentioned that the pre-Internet business, The Yellow Pages used to be a great business before Google. But then Google got so good that everyone stopped using the yellow pages.
“The way I imagine this happening is that the URL/Search bar of the browser gets replaced with AI that autocompletes my thought/question as I type it while also providing the best answer (which may be a link to a website or product),” he added.
ChatGPT is new. It will take some time for people to get used to it. Also, OpenAI has publicly acknowledged that ChatGPT may generate incorrect answers that sound believable but has no factual base.
But people will still continue using Google, just because uses its complex algorithms to make its Google Search valuable for users.
